Getting to and Around Kauai
Whether you’re arriving at the airport or exploring the island, these driving directions will help you reach your rental easily — and enjoy your stay in comfort. Use this guide to navigate Kauai’s scenic roads from your arrival point to your home base, including how to reach peaceful spots like Lae Nani on the east shore.
From Arrival: Getting to Your Kauai Rental
If you arrive at Lihue Airport (LIH), reaching Lae Nani is quick and easy: drive about 6 miles north on the main highway, cross the second bridge, and turn onto Papaloa Road just before the Shell gas station—the Lae Nani Condos entrance will be on your right past the tennis courts. Shuttle and taxi services are available if you prefer not to drive; however, renting a car is highly recommended for convenient island exploration.
Understanding Kauai’s Road Layout
Kauai’s road system forms a “horseshoe,” connecting the north, south, and east shores but without a full loop around the west side, meaning you often retrace routes when travelling between regions. The main coastal artery is the Kūhiō Highway (Route 56), which runs from Lihue through Kapaa and up toward the North Shore. Because of this layout and occasional traffic, especially on the east side, travel times can be longer than expected—particularly if you’re trying to visit both the North Shore and South Shore in a single day.
